Currently, if you want the core rule book, you need to buy the starter box. The starter box has a few other exclusives; the reference sheets for rules, the passing ruler, and the gauges for throw ins and bounces. The problem is that the starter box is a high initial cost for players who are not well off. Part of what makes Blood Bowl great is that you can buy a team at a low price and get playing relatively quickly.
You can also spread the cost out over several weeks by buying dice, pitches, and books as you get your pocket money in. You can live without it, particualrly if a friend has one, but thatmakes spreading the word of Nuffle or playing with other friends hard.
